This is a BONUS episode I have promised for many months, a recording of Paul Guschlbauer’s 2017 Red Bull X-Alps talk he gave when he came through Sun Valley (and broke his personal best!) this August to do some flying on his way south on his Supercub Overland Expedition. This took my good man Myles over 100 hours of editing to put together and was a proper pain in the butt, so PLEASE watch- there are many, many gems here and you’ll get to see some pretty exciting X-Alps flying.

It was a remarkable week- nearly 1,000 km in three flights, all of them one personal best after another. But the big one is a pretty wild story in extreme conditions in huge terrain on a very marginal day at best, and one that probably should never be repeated. Top speeds of 115-120 km / hr in the flats is one thing, but flying over 6 major mountain ranges from Idaho deep into Montana at that speed is certainly living on the edge!

The Red Bull live tracking is great, but it misses out on all the behind-the-scenes and in this talk we dive into what the fans don’t get to see. We talk training, supplements, our decision on using the nightpass the first night, mistakes made, good moves, dicey launches, crazy weather and how the 2017 race was the most brutal yet. In 12 days I did 16 1/2 marathons, climbed the height of Everest 4 times (34,000 meters of vertical ascent), flew over 1,000 km- and I was still 308 km from goal! Only two athletes made it, Chrigel Maurer won for his 5th straight time, and rookie Benoit Outers made it in just before the time expired. 5 athletes were eliminated and 7 withdrew due to injury or exhaustion.

And here it is! The long-awaited show hosted by Bill Belcourt, dedicated 100% to your questions. We asked fans of the show to send us any questions related to flying so the Yoda of the sky, Bill Belcourt could answer them in the unique way that only Bill can. We talk about how to deal with turbulence, creating better headspace, how to mitigate intermediate syndrome, how to gaggle fly, how to deal with negative people in a positive way (ie avoiding ground suck), when to leave a thermal, techniques for landing backwards, how to pick the good days, team flying, when to launch in a thermal cycle and a LOT more! Enjoy!

When we got done with the show luckily I kept recording because Larry immediately started relating one of the funniest stories I’ve ever heard. It all went down in Bir, India and it involved a bus load of pilots who happened to be on acid, a blown transmission, and a whole lot of luck. Prepare to laugh.
