Bonus Episode! Weather Episode #3 with Gavin Morris

Nik Hawks sits down with Australian meteorologist, channel 9 weatherman and paragliding pilot Gavin Morris to talk all things weather, forecasting and identifying good days in this 3rd and final bonus episode in our weather series. Gavin started his weather studies as a surfer in the 80’s then moved into reporting for snow and surf forecasts and is now who many Australians see on TV every day to get their daily weather. Gavin says we can think of ourselves as weather balloons as we soar up through the atmosphere.

Bonus Episode! Weather episode #2 with Jeff Shapiro

Jeff Shapiro returns to the podcast to share his weather forecasting flow in this awesome bonus episode (using various weather tools, figuring out lapse rate, identifying wicked days, etc) and he shares some incredibly valuable information for managing risk and what the sport has taught him over the years. Bonus Episode! Weather Series Episode 1 with Emi Carvalho

This is the first of three shows in a bonus series for our subscribers dedicated to building an understanding of the weather and forecasting. Emi Carvalho studied physics in school, but it wasn’t until he began paragliding that applied physics interested him.  He talks about the basics of weather, focusing on island weather and the possibilities inherent in an island with mountains over 2,000m.  Emi talks about where he turns to first for weather (Windy and any local knowledge), and what he usually looks for (wind intensity, direction, and temps at different altitudes.).

Bonus Segment- Jeff Shapiro and the Thermal Crescendo

We’re working on a series of weather shows and Nik Hawks recently jumped on the phone with Jeff Shapiro to talk weather and they headed off into a super interesting direction for about 15 minutes into a talk that Jeff has been giving to his students about how thermals work…and the strategies we need to employ to use them effectively. “Use some fu$%ing discipline!”. Find yourself bombing out in comps? Frequently frustrated by a shorter day than you could have gotten? Listen up.

An Evening with Paul Guschlbauer- 2017 Red Bull X-Alps Highlights

This is a BONUS episode I have promised for many months, a recording of Paul Guschlbauer’s 2017 Red Bull X-Alps talk he gave when he came through Sun Valley (and broke his personal best!) this August to do some flying on his way south on his Supercub Overland Expedition. This took my good man Myles over 100 hours of editing to put together and was a proper pain in the butt, so PLEASE watch- there are many, many gems here and you’ll get to see some pretty exciting X-Alps flying.

Episode 76- The Ask Me Anything show! And a fun little story of a Big day:)

It was a remarkable week- nearly 1,000 km in three flights, all of them one personal best after another. But the big one is a pretty wild story in extreme conditions in huge terrain on a very marginal day at best, and one that probably should never be repeated. Top speeds of 115-120 km / hr in the flats is one thing, but flying over 6 major mountain ranges from Idaho deep into Montana at that speed is certainly living on the edge!
