Joerg Ewald paragliding world cup disentis, task 1
On August 19, 2020 veteran World Cup pilot Joerg Ewald lost control of his wing very low on the terrain during a World Cup in Disentis, Switzerland and the world went dark. Literally. Joerg has almost no memory of the crash because of the hard blow and is incredibly lucky to have survived the crash. His recovery has been slow and considerably brutal. But this week he’s down in Loma Bola coaching the Swiss Team at the World’s and his body and mind are moving forward. We recorded this show this spring, over 6 months ago and at the time of the recording I didn’t know exactly where it fit. Joerg’s accident is dark. But it isn’t uncommon. I believe listening to these stories helps us become better pilots by looking at the risks we all take with honesty and clarity and not believing “it won’t happen to me.” But these stories are also traumatic, even for the listener. If you’ve had an accident and are having a hard time coming back, listening to Joerg might inspire and help you heal. If you haven’t had an accident this show may help you tread the dangerous waters we swim in with more awareness. Or, this might not be the time or the place for a show like this depending on where you are in your flying career.
